The Difference Between Myofascial Release and Massage

November 22, 2021

A massage highlights numerous techniques in the name of therapy, relaxation, or tension relief. Whether deep tissue, pre-natal or hot stone, each type of massage all serves a distinct purpose.

Put simply, massage is generally aimed at soothing sore or overworked muscles and relaxing the nervous system. A special type of massage called myofascial release targets a specific part of our bodies affected by a buildup of toxins and reduced blood flow and oxygen.

What Is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on skin treatment that involves the gentle application of sustained pressure onto the fascial - the web of connective tissue that extends throughout the body, surrounding and permeating every nerve, muscle, blood vessel, bone, and organ. This technique was developed to address specific areas of pain and relieve the tightness that causes muscle restriction. Myofascial release uses sustained pressure in order to stretch and lengthen the fascia to return it to its relaxed and wavy configuration.

Differences and Similarities

The main difference between massage and myofascial release is the mode of administration. While massage addresses general areas of the body, myofascial release focuses on specific areas. Unlike massage, myofascial release does not use oils or libricants.

On the other hand, myofascial release and massage share similarities as they are both hands-on therapies. They both require the application of pressure on the areas where the therapy is being administered.

How Can Massage Therapy & Myofascial Release Help?

Massage uses hands-on techniques to loosen muscles, restore motion and decrease pain. Soft tissues are manipulated to promote a deeper healing and overall well-being.

Myofascial release focuses on stretching and manual pressure that loosens restricted motion. It addresses a number of conditions and symptoms and can be quite helpful when an injury occurs or when you lose flexibility or function. MFR can also be helpful if you experience chronic back, shoulder, hip, or any other pain from a soft tissue as it can help alleviate the pain.
